Wolfson has today announced the launch of a new line of audio codec chips to meet the growing demand for perfect sound in handheld multimedia devices. Key features of the new line of chips include enhanced audio processing, a video buffer and a new powerful speaker driver, as well as a range of solutions that Wolfson will offer for this market.

Two of the Wolfson audio codec devices, the WM8980 with stereo and the WM8982 for mono, each have a video buffer that can be connected to the TV to play back images directly. This feature will become more and more popular in many portable devices that provide both image and audio capabilities. In the past, an external video op amp was required to implement these functions. WM8978 - Wolfson's third device is a full-featured stereo version of the WM8974 introduced in October 2004.

The video buffer is designed to support AC or DC power to the video cable, providing a high-quality video reproduction with an optional 6dB gain and 3rd order low-pass filter structure. This existing design mode eliminates the need for a central sink calibration and a large DC resistance plug capacitor.

These three new products feature a digital signal processing core that filters wind noise, especially for audio recording in video systems; they also feature a 5-band equalizer that enhances 3D sound to improve audio output; a programmable The notch filter removes motor noise when pushing and pulling the lens and aligning the focus. These devices also come with an integrated phase-locked loop that supports a frequency range of 12 to 19 MHz. They also integrate support for differential or single-ended microphones and drivers for speakers and headphones, further reducing the number of components in the final system.

The three codecs deliver high-quality audio speaker power of up to 900mW, which can drive piezoelectric speakers. A digital playback limiter prevents additional speaker output. The operating voltages of these three codecs can be simulated down to 2.5 volts and the digital core can be 1.62 volts.

Both the WM8978 and WM8982 are available in a 32-pin QFN package. The purchase price is priced at $3.85 and $2.10, respectively. The WM8980 is available in a 40-pin QFN package and is priced at $4.50 when purchased at 10,000 units.
