About the working principle and parameters of the compressor

The Mixing Guide uses more than a hundred pages to introduce dynamic processors, showing the dynamic processing of the components in the recording mix. The Chinese version of the "Remix Guide" may be due to the rush of translation. Some terms in the dynamic processor section are not very accurate. For example, the Threshold threshold is translated into a threshold, which is easy to be compared with the Gate in the Extender. Confusion, not just for beginners who find it difficult to read, even a sound engineer who has been working for several years is not easy to read.

If you only discuss dynamic processors from an application, not an academic point of view, much of this chapter is temporarily put on hold or a sentence, which is the original intention of my topic. Compressors are the most commonly used of many dynamic processors, and I will start with the compressor first.

About the working principle and parameters of the compressor

How does the compressor work?

When many vocals and instruments have just been recorded by the microphone, they are often very dynamic. The performance is that some parts are very loud, very prominent, and some parts are too soft and small to hear. If you use faders to manually balance these very dynamic tracks, it is difficult, time consuming, and inaccurate to hear every subtle performance. By using a compressor, you can limit the dynamic range of the audio signal, making it easier to get a more stable level in recording and mixing.

Let us listen to an example.

About the working principle and parameters of the compressor

The dynamics of vocals are very large, some of which are covered up by music, while others are much more prominent than music.

This is after the application is compressed.

About the working principle and parameters of the compressor

As you can hear and see, compression can reduce the dynamic range of vocal lyrics, making the sound better placed in the band and being audible at all times.

In uncompressed audio, the difference between the softest and loudest lyrics averages about 6 dB.

After applying compression, the dynamic range averages only about 3dB. Here, the compressor detects and rang the louder words in the lyrics and turns them down, or called compression. After compressing these louder words, I can increase the volume of the entire channel so that the soft and other parts can be placed more stably in the band.
