Apple applies for new patented AR windshield system in Europe

In the past 8 months, we have seen countless patented inventions related to autonomous vehicles, most of which were filed in Europe. At the time, there were reports that Apple was already developing a self-driving car with Volkswagen. There is news today that Apple has once again applied for a related patent in Europe, and it has been approved on August 1, 2018.

Apple applies for new patented AR windshield system in Europe

The patent contains a futuristic AR windshield system, or head-up display. Apple described all aspects of this AR display system in detail, and they even mentioned that FaceTime conversations can be carried out between passengers of different autonomous vehicles. In addition, when the passengers panic, the system can detect and judge, and then make corresponding adjustments, so it helps the passengers to stay calm.

Apple pointed out that in many cases it can provide graphic overlays in the perceptual environment of transparent surfaces (including windows). Graphical overlays can provide users with relevant information, including information related to one or more parts of the perceived environment.

In some cases, graphic overlays can be used for vehicles and provide vehicle-related (such as vehicle speed) and environment-related information. Such information can be presented in a transparent display, including the front window, that is, the windshield. In this way, the passengers of the vehicle can perceive the information it provides, including the driver.

In some cases, the display graphics should be able to cover specific objects in the environment, and to enhance, change, and control information related to the environment. Such a graphic overlay can be called an augmented reality display screen.

Car navigation system

In Figure 1, we see that the vehicle includes the Vehicle NavigaTIon System (vehicle navigation system). In some embodiments, the vehicle navigation system can automatically control one or more vehicle control elements (#150) to make the vehicle #110 automatically follow one or more driving routes in the environment #100.

In some embodiments, the vehicle navigation system may display information to one or more passengers of the vehicle through one or more interfaces.

At least one interface can include a transparent surface, and the car navigation system can control graphics to appear on the transparent indication (vehicle windshield), so that passengers can perceive relevant information through the transparent surface.

External sensor #116: Apple pointed out that the vehicle includes one or more sets of external sensors that can generate data representations about one or more parts of the external environment.

The external sensor may include a visible light camera device, an infrared camera device, a near-infrared camera device, a beam scanning device, an ultrasonic sensor device, an audio sensor device, a depth camera device or a radar device, etc.

The sensor data representation generated by one or more external sensors can be transmitted to the vehicle navigation system, and the latter can generate and maintain a world model of the environment based on this.

In some embodiments, the vehicle navigation system generates and maintains a world model based at least in part on information received by remote services, systems, devices, and the like.

Internal sensor #118: Apple further pointed out that the vehicle includes a set of one or more internal sensors. Internal sensors mainly generate sensor data representations about the internal conditions of the vehicle (including passengers).

The internal sensor may include a visible light camera, an infrared camera, a near infrared camera, a beam scanning device, an ultrasonic sensor device, an audio sensor device, a depth camera device or a radar device, etc.

Control element #150: The vehicle includes one or more control elements related to vehicle navigation. The control elements may include steering wheel control elements, electric motors, throttle control elements, brake control elements, accelerometers or speedometers, and so on.

Vehicle interface #130: The vehicle has one or more interfaces, which include one or more user interfaces that one or more passengers can interact with, and one that communicates with one or more remote devices, vehicles, services, or systems Or multiple communication interfaces.

Transparent surface #134: The vehicle includes one or more transparent surfaces, where one or more passengers can directly perceive one or more parts of the environment in the vehicle. In some embodiments, the vehicle navigation system may generate, manage, and control one or more graphic displays, including one or more augmented reality display screens displayed on the transparent surface of the vehicle.

Augmented reality display module #111: As shown in the figure above, the car navigation system includes an augmented reality display mode #111, also known as an augmented reality display system. In some embodiments, the vehicle navigation system and this module can be implemented by different computer systems.

Limited examples of augmented reality displays

Figures 2A and 2B of the patent show related examples. We can see that the augmented reality display shows the vehicle speed and the local speed limit.

In some embodiments, the augmented reality display screen can display information in different locations according to the difference between the real-time speed of the vehicle and the local speed limit.

The driver #210 who looks at the AR windshield can see the real-time speed of the vehicle and the local speed limit, so that he can adjust his driving speed according to the situation to avoid violating traffic laws.

The virtual display screen can always follow the road so that the driver's AR screen element can always be placed corresponding to the center of the road ahead.

FaceTIme dialogue between vehicles

Another function described in the patent is related to the FaceTIme dialogue between vehicles. Apple wrote: "In some embodiments, the augmented reality display system included in the vehicle enables visual communication between passengers in the vehicle and remote users (including passengers in another vehicle)."

Passenger monitoring

A few weeks ago, we have seen manufacturers developing self-driving car systems that monitor passenger pressure levels and make corresponding levels. Today's Apple patent also touches this aspect.

Apple pointed out that in some embodiments, monitoring passenger stress levels and cognitive load can include one or more aspects, including eye movement, body temperature, body posture, breathing rate, head movement, blink rate, and heart rhythm.

The system can determine whether the passenger has reached the threshold value of the pressure level and the recognition load level according to one or more monitoring values.

The augmented reality display system can dynamically adjust the augmented reality display, including display elements, according to stress levels and cognitive load levels.

Since this is only a patent, it is not yet certain when the related product will be released.
