"Bankruptcy Tide" Attacks Taiwan's Photovoltaic Industry and Urges the Government to Give Help

Following the announcement of bankruptcy by US solar companies in the third quarter of 2011, it is reported that European solar energy companies also face financing difficulties. The weak market demand is like an accelerator, forcing solar companies to find ways to maintain a healthy cash flow. Some Taiwanese solar energy companies fear that the closure tide will hit the solar energy industry in Taiwan and urgently need government support.

European solar companies have always played an important role in the global solar industry, but the cheap products from Chinese competitors have also hit these companies. Before the 2009 financial crisis, many small and medium-sized enterprises had begun to withdraw from the industry due to lack of competitiveness and weak cash flow control. The European debt crisis in 2011 once again challenged the ability of European solar energy companies to manage their funds.

The European debt crisis and weak market demand have led European financial institutions to think twice when lending to solar companies. In addition to facing fierce competition from Chinese solar companies, European solar companies also have to cope with the debt crisis. Many European solar companies have begun to clear their inventory and use low-cost strategies to dump solar energy products. According to reports, some solar companies have already started selling equipment to cash out.

For solar companies in Taiwan, European solar companies have always been very important customers. Many OEM orders received by Taiwan's solar cell manufacturers come from Europe. If European solar companies cannot survive this crisis, Taiwan’s solar companies will lose large numbers of customers.

In fact, for Taiwan's solar energy companies, market demand in Europe in 2011 has been declining. Many Taiwanese solar companies are trying their best to obtain orders from Chinese companies. However, mainland China has a relatively complete photovoltaic supply chain, which will soon replace solar energy companies in Taiwan. In addition, relying on mainland Chinese companies also means that corporate profits will be greatly reduced.

Solar companies in China have strong government support, but Taiwan’s solar companies are still waiting for government support. Although the Taiwanese government has claimed how much revenue it generates from the solar energy industry, its support for local solar energy companies has disappeared.

The survival and death of Taiwan’s solar energy companies lies between flashpoints. The Taiwanese government can learn from neighboring regions such as Japan, China, and South Korea, increase support for local solar energy companies, create a huge domestic market space, and help these companies overcome their difficulties.
