Professors of the Department of Physics at the University of Science and Technology have developed new technologies that can brighten LEDs by four times and reduce production costs.

The professor said that although LEDs are durable and expensive, they still have technical problems to solve. For example, he pointed out that the semiconductor material used to make LEDs will produce strong internal total reflection, which will cause most of the light to be lost, affecting the performance of the LED. The professor pointed out that a layer of nano-scale metal film was added to the surface of the semiconductor material of the LED, and the plasmon crystal was engraved to guide the light that was originally reflected and wasted. Taking the green LED with the weakest luminous performance as an example, the brightness of the light can be increased by 4 times with the new technology. In addition, plasma crystals can be used in place of metals to transfer current, helping to reduce production costs.
