CANbus TDM is a powerful triggering, decoding and measurement/illustration tool for LeCroy oscilloscopes that greatly enhances the ability to debug and validate CAN ECU or network performance. It combines the physical layer analysis capabilities of the oscilloscope with message-based triggering, protocol decoding, and CAN-specific measurements and graphics.

LeCroy CAN triggers have the unique ability to trigger data frames, remote frames or error frames. The user can customize the ID value and DATA value of the data frame or remote frame. In addition, it can be combined with LeCroy SMART triggers to provide triggering by time and signal determination.
Figure 1 shows a typical trigger setup in which a CAN trigger is combined with a decision SMART trigger to select a particular CAN bus message. In this setup, the trigger is initiated or determined based on the analog voltage representing the sensor input. This voltage is applied to channel 2 of the oscilloscope and triggers when the source voltage exceeds 5 V. In this case, the trigger point is expected to be a message frame containing the sensor's peak input value. The sensor uses ID 210. After the sensor input reaches 5 V, the CAN trigger is set to trigger ID 210, as shown in Figure 2.
The message content can be read and converted via the unique CAN Bus TDM parameter "CAN to Value". Curve F1 in Figure 1 shows a time-aligned tracking plot of parameter values. The CAN bus TDM picture, curve CA in Figure 1, shows a half second CANBus service. CAN Zoom expands the message view that triggers the oscilloscope, decoding the ID, DLC, DATA, and CRC fields of the CAN message.
In addition to the edge or the criteria for crossing the threshold, the oscilloscope can make decisions based on the state of the analog input. In this case, you must maintain a certain state, such as a strobe signal, until the oscilloscope triggers. Therefore, the trigger determined by the state is conditionally started, and the decision trigger discussed above is unconditionally started.
Time-sensitive SMART triggering is also available in CANBus TDM. Remember that the CAN trigger module will output a trigger signal whenever the message frame meets the trigger criteria (ID field, data content, frame type, etc.), SMART trigger supports CAN trigger as the trigger source, and triggers two trigger events. The time interval between them is shown in Figure 3, where the glitch trigger is set to the trigger source on channel 4 using the CAN trigger. In addition to glitch triggering, width triggering, interval triggering, and drop triggering can also be applied.

The setup in Figure 3 will trigger CAN messages that occur within 1.02 ms of each other. The CAN trigger setting becomes the trigger output for all message frame generations, as shown in Figure 4. In this way, we can see all the possible messages that occur within 1 ms of each other. Another option is to use CAN triggers to select specific messages and/or content and then trigger when specific user timings meet user-defined criteria.
CANbus TDM extends the use and functionality of the oscilloscope. It is seamlessly integrated into the instrument structure so all existing functions can be used with CANbus triggering, decoding measurements and graphical functions.
