Large Comparison of CMMB Terminal Chips: Several Typical Tuner Analysis Evaluations

The CMMB terminal chip contains modules such as a tuner, a demodulator, and a descrambler for decoding, and it is crucial for the front-end tuner. This article selects five typical tuner chips for analysis and comparison, namely ADMTV102, ADMTV803, MxL5007T, SMS1180 and TP3021.

ADMTV102 is ADI's earliest tuner supporting the CMMB standard. It has been widely used in domestic terminal equipment such as mobile phones, mobile TVs, and MP4. In addition to supporting CMMB, this chip also supports the national standard DTMB, European DVB-H/T, The T-DMB and FM launched by Korea include FM (65~108MHZ), band-III (174~245MHZ), VHF (470MHz~862MHz), and L-band (1450~1492MHz).

ADI's recently introduced ADMTV803 also supports a variety of digital television standards. The received bands are VHF (54~245MHz) and UHF (470~862MHz). The data provided by the ADI official website shows that the ADMTV803 has newly added US ATSC-M/H and Japanese ISDB-T standard support, and has switched from FM to DAB that supports FM upgrade. By dismantling, the RF signal input pins of the chip were found to be reduced from three to two by the ADMTV102. The system module layout has a very high similarity with the ADMTV102.

The MxL5007T is unique in that it can receive 44Hz to 885MHz continuous band signals and supports almost all major cable, terrestrial digital and analog TV standards. The chip was mass-produced by Maxlinear in the second quarter of 2008.

The SMS1180 is the first SIP package, tuner, and demodulator chip launched by SIANO for the Chinese market in July 2008. In addition to the UHF (470 to 862 MHz) band, the tuner also supports the S-band.

The TP3021 integrates tuners, demodulators, crystal oscillators, and passive components in a 7x11mm2 module, and is an integrated CMMB receiver that was jointly produced by domestic manufacturers Taizhiheng and Sharp in November 2008 to support CMMB standard UHF. And S-band, but on its official website did not disclose whether its included tuner also supports other digital television standards.

According to the above-mentioned information, we can see some changes in the development of CMMB terminal chips, from the early single tuner, demodulator, and decoder to single-chip, developed into the current mainstream tuner and demodulator combined into one, And the supported CMMB band is also increasing.

First, the chip size

The ADMTV102 has a chip size of approximately 2.82x2.87mm2. The ADMTV803 has an area of only 2.64x2.29mm2, which is 64% of the ADMTV102 based on the same feature size. The chip size of MxL5007T is 2.70x2.70mm2, which is not obvious in the current tuner, but it has a certain cost advantage compared to the area of 4.81x3.51mm2 tuner chip in SMS1180. The tuner chip size included in the TP3021 is 2.75x2.69mm2.

Second, power consumption

The ADMTV102 consumes 180 milliwatts and 200 milliwatts of power while receiving VHF and UHF signals. The ADMTV803 consumes only half the power of the ADMTV102 and 92 milliwatts (VHF) and 94 milliwatts (UHF) respectively in the continuous mode. ), by the King (Shanghai) Microelectronics Corporation (hereinafter referred to as "Santa King") on the chip RF signal receiving path analysis, the two chips from the low noise to the filter circuit is larger; MxL5007T power consumption in five The highest in the chip is 300 milliwatts, making it more suitable for set-top boxes than mobile devices; the TP3021 consumes less than 80 milliwatts, while Siano claims that the SMS1180 consumes very low power, only 31 milliwatts.

Third, sensitivity

ADMTV102 automatic gain control dynamic range of typical -102dBm to 0dBm, ADMTV803 is ?102dBm to +10dBm; TP3021 test using QPSK modulation receiver sensitivity of about -99.6dBm; SMS1180 has a circuit in the tuner and demodulator The module ensures its receiving sensitivity in indoor deep environment. Sung King will dissect the tuner chip in SMS1180 in the near future.

At present, more and more domestic and foreign companies are involved in the CMMB chip design and production. For example, Spirit Core Integration has launched the S202ITM and S203ITM; France Dekkan launched the Octopus platform and the DIB10098 chip in February 2009. The DIB10098 is a tuning and solution. The 65nm process chip integrated with the modulation, memory and power management modules. In addition, Broadcom will also mass-produce the CMMB chip with integrated tuner and demodulator at the end of 2009. The chip consumes less power and can automatically identify and select the frequency band.

Fourth, multi-standard tuner MxL5007T

The MxL5007T is a digital ground silicon tuner that Maxlinear produced in 2008. The feature of this chip is that it can receive signals from 44HZ to 885MHz continuous frequency band through the antenna or cable. It supports multiple standards such as China CMMB, US ATSC, ATSC-M/H, and European DVB-T.

The MxL5007T integrates variable-gain LNAs, mixers, low-pass filters, automatic gain amplifiers, baseband DSPs, and phase-locked loops.

MxL5007T chip size is 2.7X2.7mm2, which is a medium size in digital TV silicon tuner, but compared with ADI's VHF/UHF multi-digital TV standard silicon tuner ADMTV803, the single chip has about 40% more area.

Sung King found through research, MxL5007T chip I2C interface and baseband DSP about 110,000 units, its area accounted for 18% of the entire chip, compared with ADMTV803 (its area only accounts for about 5% of the whole chip), MxL5007T digital control logic scale A lot bigger.

In addition, the chip integrates two phase-locked loops. In addition to the silicon-tuner chip-integrated, phase-locked loop for signal down-conversion, a phase-locked loop that generates a relatively low-frequency clock is also designed. Analog-to-digital conversion sampling of the received signal. It is reported that MxL5007T is currently used for cable television signal reception.

V. Expert Comments:

ADMTV102 is a product with a relatively high market share and relatively balanced performance. The disadvantages are slightly higher power consumption and a greater number of off-chip components (approximately 20). The ADMTV102's upgraded product, the ADMTV803, reduces power consumption to approximately 90mW. At the same time, it integrates numerous resistors, capacitors, and other devices, reducing the number of off-chip devices to six, which is advantageous for reducing system cost; in addition, its noise figure is approximately 1.5dB lower than ADMTV102. Receiver sensitivity performance has been greatly improved.

Because Mxl5007T supports 44M~1G frequency band, support intermediate frequency output at the same time, cause its power consumption is higher than other CMMB tuner; But its 300mW power consumption is still relatively low in supporting the whole frequency band tuner.

The Siano 1180 tuner area is more than 2 times larger than the ADMTV803, and the cost is higher. The official 31mW power consumption is the power consumption of the time-sharing, the actual power consumption of the tuner should be higher than the ADMTV803.

The TP3021 integrates Sharp's tuner and many external components, providing the highest level of integration and sensitivity. However, due to the high price, practical application is less.

From the actual use of the chip and test conditions, ADMTV102 is a better choice for CMMB applications. In the next 1-2 years, its upgraded product ADMTV803 will have better performance and lower overall cost.
