The exploration space is located on the third floor of the University Library of Nottingham Ningbo, China, with an area of ​​about 150 square meters. In this space is equipped with multi-screen interactive devices, multi-touch desktop, VR (virtual reality) equipment and other hottest technology products and applied to teaching. The aim is to change the traditional teaching model and use new technologies and facilities to provide a student-centered teaching interaction model to stimulate students' creativity and enthusiasm for learning.

In the multi-screen interactive teaching area, there is no traditional rostrum setting. The teacher walks around the classroom. The students can either discuss in groups or listen in groups. Each group has a multimedia screen at the desk to discuss. Students can connect to their own equipment and they can work on their own. Presented on the screen, each team member can not only input their own comments and opinions on the same document or data, but also read the content entered by other members in real time, just like the real-time “barrage” of the video site.

The multi-touch desktop is a 54-inch large screen. The 3D architecture, design drawings, model diagrams, etc. can be displayed on the screen. As your finger slides, you can zoom, drag, flip and other functions to render the design in 3D. As a result, team members can jointly design and modify the same document and instantly present team design results. “This approach allows students to get the most intuitive presentation of their designs, make presentations and project discussions more visually interesting, and enhance students’ classroom learning and experience,” said Clayton Austin.

The hottest VR (virtual reality) is now in the lab. "VR is widely used in teaching," ClaytonAustin said, "VR can be used in various teaching scenarios. Scenes that are not easily presented and observed in a real environment are explosions, atomic reactions, molecular structures, or roaming space. You can Landing on Mars or the Moon, you can have an interstellar experience without being an astronaut, so this knowledge is no longer an abstract, conceptual perception, but an immersive intuitive experience."

Currently, the Business School and Chemical Engineering Department of the University of Nottingham Ningbo, China have begun to use exploration space for teaching. “Future laboratories will also collaborate with school building departments, industrial design, aerospace and other professional courses to design a new teaching model suitable for this latest technology. Students can also book laboratories and carry out related project research and development.”

“We will also set up VR production courses to teach students how to make VR scenes and hope that more new technology scenes will be applied to teaching,” said Clayton Austin.
