Summary of the advantages of environmental protection power supply

More and more Lambda customers are looking for and getting environmentally friendly (EF) or "green" power supplies. What is the composition of the EF/Green power supply? A power supply requires a variety of factors to be called an "EF/Green" power supply. These factors include: RoHS compliant, electrical noise (EMI) suppression, high efficiency, and power factor correction (PFC).

RoHS compliant : Lead, mercury and other “hazardous” elements and chemicals used in the production of electronic equipment are now clearly defined. In accordance with the law (since July 2006), the European Union (EU) has banned or severely restricted electronic equipment. Use the above "hazardous" elements. These restrictions are described in detail in the RoHS Directive (Restriction of Hazardous Substances). Currently, all products sold to EU countries are subject to the RoHS Directive. Similar restrictions have been adopted in many countries in the Americas. Lambda has always been a leader in providing RoHS-compliant power supplies, and we have consistently adhered to this standard even if our customers have not yet made such a request. This fully reflects Lambda's efforts and efforts to create a greener and cleaner environment for the planet. More than 99% of Lambda's power products are RoHS compliant, with only a few exceptions for industries that are not subject to RoHS restrictions (such as special military applications).

EMI suppression: All electrical equipment generates electrical noise to varying degrees, "polluting" our power lines and air lines in the form of harmful noise spikes and radio interference. According to the strict standards established and maintained by the FCC and international organizations (IEC, EN), the noise produced by these harmful noise generators is strictly limited to the amount of EMI (electromagnetic interference) allowed to be emitted. Power supplies are power devices that have inherent electrical noise problems (both conducted and radiated) that must be addressed by the power supply designer and manufacturer. Without properly designed internal EMI filters and RF shielding, power supplies can be a significant source of pollution in our electrical and electronic environments. Lambda power supplies meet the most stringent EMI suppression standards. For example, on many Lambda power supplies, EMI can meet extremely stringent FCC Class B standards.

Efficient: The DC power output from the power supply is divided by the AC power entering the power supply to obtain the rated efficiency of the power supply. For example, if a power supply requires 100 W AC power to provide 90 W DC output power, the power efficiency is 90 W divided by 100 W, which is 0.90 or 90%. There is a significant difference in savings in electricity and energy losses (in the form of heat) when comparing 75% efficiency power supplies with 90% efficiency power supplies.

Power Factor Correction (PFC): The new switching power supply should include an active power factor correction circuit to maximize the AC power used by the power supply. Technically, the power factor of a power supply is the ratio of actual power to apparent power (Volts-rms x Amps-rms), which is a fraction between 0 and 1.0. If not corrected, the power factor (PF) of the switching power supply will usually be around 0.65 or less. In the case of active PFC, the switching power supply can achieve a power factor of 0.96–0.99. Without PFC, the switching power supply will absorb AC line current in the form of spikes or pulses rather than pure sine waves; the end result is that AC power lines, circuit breakers, and power generation equipment need to be powered by PFC. It is even bigger.

What does high efficiency and PFC mean for environmental protection?

Most of the electricity currently used is produced by burning fossil fuels such as oil, natural gas or coal. At present, due to the large amount of carbon dioxide generated by power generation equipment, the greenhouse effect is showing an alarming growth trend. Therefore, whenever we reduce electricity consumption, it will contribute to the purification of the environment, reduce CO2 in the atmosphere, reduce our dependence on imported oil from OPEC countries and reduce transportation costs (tank fuel burning diesel fuel) Will further increase pollution).

In addition, it can save a considerable amount of money for power users. Basically, power dissipation saves only 1W, saving 365 days x 24 hours x 1W = 8.76kwh per year. If the cost of electricity is $0.30/kwh, it would be equivalent to $2.63 per watt per year. If we increase the power efficiency from 85% to 90% on a 150W device (only 5% increase), the savings can reach 7.5W [(150W x 0.15 = 22.5W) - (150 x 0.10 = 15W) = 7.5W]. This is equivalent to an annual savings of $19.73 (7.5W x 2.63 USD/year = $19.73/year). During the service life (4–5 years) this will exceed the purchase price of the power supply, and we also reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the air. Assuming an OEM uses 90% (rather than 85%) of its power supply in its final product and produces 100,000 units/year, the “total power savings” will reach 100,000 units x 7.5W = 750,000 W, this is a considerable power saving.

Moreover, the higher the power efficiency, the less power is lost in the power supply, and the lower the energy requirements for removing waste energy (in the form of heat) by cooling the power supply or the room where the equipment is located (by using electromechanical fans, blowers, Air conditioning, etc.). The combination of high efficiency and PFC in the power supply makes it possible to use small-sized distribution lines, low-rated circuit breakers and fewer power generation equipment (air pollution sources).

Lambda's HWS series, 1000 W switching power supply is fully RoHS compliant, meets FCC Class B EMI requirements, has an integrated active PFC (power factor = 0.98) and 88% typical operating efficiency.

Summary: As mentioned above, many factors have contributed to the “environmental/green” power supply. And, for the end user, it also has significant advantages. Lambda is a leading supplier of advanced power equipment. Our active activities around the world will ensure that we continue to be at the forefront of these “green & clean” power products.
