Electrification is a major opportunity for Chinese car companies to go international. Commercial vehicle BYD has already tasted the sweetness, and SAIC has the latest move in passenger cars.
On November 16, SAIC MG's first pure electric SUV, MG ZS pure electric, was unveiled at the 2018 Guangzhou Auto Show. The car will go on sale in the first half of next year in countries including the UK and Germany. In the early stage, MG ZS pure electric vehicles will also be tested in European countries such as the UK, Belgium, Luxembourg, Spain, Germany and France.
With the help of the international influence of the old British car companies, the MG ZS pure electric vehicle is equipped with SAIC's "three electric" system. SAIC's strategic plan to go out with the help of electrification is self-evident. Can foreigners buy it?
Different "four modernizations"
The "four modernizations" of the automobile industry are hot. According to a common saying in the industry, the "four modernizations" refer to electrification, intelligence, networking and sharing.
SAIC MG's formulation is a bit different.
SAIC's "New Four Modernizations"
SAIC MG's official website defines "four modernizations" as intelligent networking, electrification, sharing and internationalization - combining intelligence and networking, adding an internationalization, which is called "SAIC New Four Modernizations" . One of the breakthroughs for SAIC to seek internationalization is MG Motor, which was established in 1924.
In 2007, SAIC acquired Nanjing Automobile and became the new boss of MG. Ten years later, in 2017, MG sold about 140,000 vehicles worldwide, of which 110,000 were from the Chinese market. However, although local sales have an absolute advantage, MG's global positioning has not changed.
During the Guangzhou Auto Show, Cui Weiguo, deputy general manager of SAIC Motor, said in an exclusive interview with the media that MG has always been developing products for the global market, and the positioning of MG ZS pure electric is "global pure electric ESUV".
In terms of power performance, the MG ZS pure electric motor has a maximum power of 110kW, a NEDC comprehensive cruising range of 335kM, a 0-50km/h acceleration time of 3.1s, and a power consumption of 13.8kW per 100 kilometers.
MG said that the warranty period of the three-electric system of ZS pure electric is 8 years or 120,000 kilometers, and promised that the battery attenuation of 5 years/100,000 kilometers is less than 20%, and the battery attenuation of 8 years/200,000 kilometers is less than 30%.
British brand SAIC "Core"
MG ZS pure electric goes out, for SAIC, the biggest significance is to promote the core technology of electric vehicles of its own brand overseas.
As early as April 2015, SAIC released the "Core Power Strategy", including the "Blue Core" technology focusing on traditional automotive power systems and the core technology of new energy vehicles, that is, the "Green Core" power mentioned above. In pure electric vehicles, plug-in hybrid vehicles and fuel cell vehicles and other products.
MG ZS pure electric is equipped with the "green core" power and "three electric" systems developed by SAIC. SAIC's other new energy models equipped with "green core" power include Roewe Ei5 pure electric, ei6 plug-in hybrid, ERX5 pure electric and MG 6 plug-in hybrid.
MG 6 plug-in hybrid version launched
Since the "Innosilicon strategy" was proposed in 2015, why did MG ZS pure electric only go on the market in 2019?
Zhu Jun, deputy director of the technical center of SAIC Passenger Vehicle Company and general manager of Jieneng, said that in order to enter the European market, MG electric vehicles must comply with the regulations of 17 countries where they are/will be sold. It is not easy to develop communication modes and charging stations that comply with local standards while meeting the charging, crash and safety requirements of these countries.
In addition, since MG's electric vehicle sales market includes both Southeast Asian countries, such as Thailand, and Nordic countries, such as Norway, it is necessary to ensure the performance and life of batteries in extremely cold and high temperature regions. In addition, considering the left and right driving habits of different countries, as well as the domestic requirements for energy density, the internationalization process of MG electric vehicles faces many challenges.
In a few months, MG ZS will be listed overseas. Zhu Jun's evaluation of this car is, "I have driven so many new energy vehicles from SAIC, and my favorite is the MG ZS pure electric." Whether you are boasting or not, we will find out next year.
"Let's go out with electricity", SAIC is not the only one
With the help of the electrification wave, it is not just SAIC.
Compared with SAIC MG, BYD electric vehicles go out earlier and in more quantities:
In 2016, BYD provided a fleet of 11 electric buses to Cape Town, South Africa:
At the beginning of 2015, the BYD K9 electric bus purchased by the Japanese Princess line company was operated in Tokyo;
In May 2015, BYD's first five pure electric buses were delivered in Los Angeles;
In June 2017, 15 BYD electric buses were put into operation in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia;
In August 2017, the first batch of BYD K9 electric buses were delivered to Sydney Airport;
In December 2017, BYD electric bus fleet was operating in Okinawa, Japan;
In July 2018, Canadian transportation operator Toronto Transportation Commission purchased 10 BYD electric buses;
In August 2018, 101 BYD e6s were delivered in Bangkok;
In November 2018, Danish bus operator Anchersen ordered 27 electric buses from BYD...
In addition, in June this year, ZHIDOU obtained a purchase quota of 1,000 pure electric vehicles from the South Korean government; earlier, in 2005, Tianjin Qingyuan Automobile exported 112 "Happiness Messenger" miniature electric vehicles to the United States.
However, BYD's current overseas market is dominated by electric buses; the export models of Zhidou and Qingyuan are all miniature electric vehicles; while SAIC MG is targeting a higher-positioned passenger car market. Buying in, MG brings to SAIC the brand power of traditional British car companies; going out, SAIC will give MG the core technology of China's own brands.
As Yu Jingmin, deputy general manager of SAIC Motor, said, "Going global with new energy vehicles is our clear and firm strategy. We have the courage and confidence to bring our new energy vehicles to the world."
