US SIA Announces Future Blueprint for Semiconductors

The United States Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) recently published the 2011 International Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors (ITRS), which details various short-term and long-term development trends and plans to develop the semiconductor industry by 2026.

The blueprint announced by the Semiconductor Industry Association of America was first published on December 14, 2011 in South Korea. Fabs and research institutes in five regions including the United States, Europe, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan all contributed to the process. According to the president of the association, Brian Toohey, the team that manufactures the blueprint hopes to propose in advance the key technical difficulties and possible solutions that may be encountered, so as to allow more time for research.

In planning such a blueprint, the difficulty lies in how to follow Moore's Law and continue to miniaturize the semiconductor process, but at the same time, improve the performance to meet market demands, such as memory, microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), sensors, 3D wafers, etc. The topics are all included.

The Semiconductor Industry Association of America pointed out that DRAM development is particularly rapid in various fields. In the meantime, it is also expected to bring new technologies such as high-performance servers and video cards for game consoles.

In the blueprint, flash memory is particularly noticeable because it is used in popular portable products such as digital cameras, tablet computers, and mobile phones. According to forecasts, flash memory will be able to develop rapidly in the coming years, and it is expected to be adopted in 2016! D technology will also increase the memory capacity.
