Why does the intelligent substation use the IEC61850 protocol?

The substation intelligence has become an irreversible trend. The State Grid Corporation has completed the intelligent transformation of several substations, and plans to build about 5,100 intelligent substations during the “Twelfth Five-Year Plan” period, and intelligently transform about 1,000 substations. But how is intelligent substation intelligently controlled?

In the substation automation system, data exchange is required between the equipment and the equipment, but often the communication protocols supported by the devices of different manufacturers (suppliers) are not uniform, so that the equipment of different manufacturers cannot directly communicate, and the protocol conversion is required. It is difficult to match the equipment parts. In order to solve these problems, the IEC has developed an international standard for communication networks and systems for substation automation systems, IEC 61850. This standard uses the object-oriented idea to model the substation system, realizes the interoperability between different manufacturers' equipments and the seamless integration of substation automation systems, and lays the foundation for the future seamless communication system of power systems.

Substation configuration language SCL

The substation configuration language SCL is a substation-specific description language adopted by IEC 61850, based on XML (Extensible Markup Language). It clearly describes the configuration of substation IED equipment, substation systems and substation network communication topologies in an extensible markup language. Using SCL, it is easy to collect configuration information of devices from different manufacturers and configure the devices, making system maintenance upgrades and intelligent electronic device control easier. Using SCL to form a standard IED data transfer file avoids the overhead of protocol conversion while greatly reducing the cost of data integration and maintenance.

Elements included in SCL

The SCL file contains five elements, Header, SubstaTIon, IED, CommunicaTIon, and DataTypeTemplates.

The Header element contains information such as the version number and name of the SCL configuration file.

The SubstaTIon element describes the functional structure of the substation, the main components and electrical connections;

The IED element describes information about all IEDs, such as access points (AccessPoints), logical devices, logical nodes, data objects, and communication service functions;

The CommunicaTIon element defines the way in which logical nodes communicate between the logical bus and the IED access point;

The DataTypeTemplates element defines in detail the logical node type template that appears in the file and the data objects, attributes, and other templates included in the logical node.

So far, SCL configuration files are mainly divided into six categories, namely ICD, CID, SSD, SCD, IID, and SID.

ZLG Zhiyuan DT6000 series intelligent optical digital tester must load SCL files before testing for intelligent substation, and is compatible with various types of SCD files. DT6000 series products are widely used in handheld test instruments for intelligent substations of 110kV and above. It can be used to protect the quick test of equipment such as measurement and control devices, intelligent terminals, merging units, and transformers.
