At present, the world is in a state of depletion of resources, and the search for renewable energy is unstoppable. According to reports, research reports indicate that 2050 will be expected to achieve true renewable energy power generation to supply global electricity demand, to create a complete low-carbon power system.
According to a report by the Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT) and the international non-profit organization Energy Watch (EWG), it is possible to build a global grid powered by renewable energy by 2050, and at a cost Lower than the current energy system. The report, which was announced outside the COP23 climate conference in Bonn, said that potential renewable energy and storage technologies are combined to meet global demand for electricity by the middle of the century.
By 2050, approximately 48,800 terawatt-hours of electricity will be used each quarter of the world, which is about twice the current electricity consumption. At the same time, the authors estimate that the cost of 100% renewable energy generation in 2050 is about 403 yuan per megawatt hour (including storage and grid losses), compared to about 542 yuan per megawatt hour in 2015.
ChrisTIan Breyer, lead author of the article, professor of economics at LUT Solar and chairman of the EWG Science Department, said: "With current technology it is possible to build a complete low-carbon power system by 2050. This energy conversion will no longer be technology. Or the question of economic feasibility, but the issue of policy."
According to researchers, solar photovoltaic power generation and battery storage will be the center of energy conversion. The rapid reduction of the cost of the two technologies will facilitate wider promotion, and by 2050 solar energy will account for 69% of the energy supply. The total storage output is expected to increase from 33 TWh to 15128 TWh. Most of the output will be provided by batteries, which currently account for 93% of total power generation, which is expected to fall to 1% by 2050.
The report also suggests that if fully renewable energy is available, the global greenhouse gas emissions generated by the power generation industry will be reduced from 11GT in 2015 to zero emissions in 2050. In addition, the report also raised the number of jobs in the electrical sector from 19 million to 36 million.
Hans-Josef Fell, head of the EWG organization, said: "We should not invest more in fossil fuels or nuclear power. Renewable energy can provide us with low-cost electricity. All further development of coal, nuclear, gas and oil The plans will be stopped. Investment in renewable energy, storage facilities and power grids should be further increased. The power generation systems currently in use will bring unnecessary cost losses and increase global warming."
