[Global Network Technology Reporter Chen Jian] Qualcomm announced at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in 2018 that it will cooperate with Jaguar Land Rover and Honda to apply its technology to the 2018 model. In 2019, BYD will also support Qualcomm's Xiaolong auto platform.
When someone mentions Qualcomm's Opteron processor, you may immediately think of a smart phone, but the company also has a series of car platforms that use the Opteron name.
Qualcomm won 25 design awards at CES 2017. In 2018, the company announced at CES that it will supply the Dragon Motors platform for the 2018 Honda Accord and the future Jaguar Land Rover models. Qualcomm also announced that BYD, China’s largest electronics manufacturer, will also use Xiaolong 820Am from 2019.
Qualcomm will help provide integrated connectivity and rear-seat entertainment capabilities for advanced telematics, infotainment and digital trunking to meet the increasingly sophisticated future of cars.
In the case of Jaguar Land Rover, this means that the 4G, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi technologies provided on the Xiaolong 820Am car platform are combined to realize the entire vehicle connection. It is also equipped with Qualcomm’s Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), so vehicles will be more aware of their surroundings, which may mean that there will be close cooperation between the two sides in the future of self-driving cars.
Although the cooperation between Qualcomm and Jaguar Land Rover may be further deepened, people interested in the 2018 Honda Accord have already seen the practical application of the Xiaolong Auto Platform in the Honda Accord. Qualcomm also provides telematics, infotainment and navigation for the Accord Honda, and a Qualcomm 4G LTE modem to work with Hondalink for vehicle connectivity.
Qualcomm said that all this is to meet the needs of drivers and passengers for a more personalized driving experience. The high-end Xiaolong car platform will also support machine learning and Xiaolong neural processing engines.
BYD plans to install an infotainment and digital trunking system for future electric vehicles, and the system will use the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820A autopilot platform. The adoption of Qualcomm's self-driving plan will help improve the energy efficiency of the electronic control system, which in turn will help improve the overall performance, battery life and cruising range of the electric vehicle.
As in recent years, it is expected that car connectivity will continue to be a major trend at CES this year.
