Kia’s wireless charging technology has been successfully tested, and the popularization of wireless charging technology is imperative!

In 2017, the global sales of new energy vehicles exceeded the 1 million mark for the first time. The booming new energy vehicles have driven the development of related technologies, and wireless charging technology is one of them. Related concepts of wireless charging technology have been proposed since the 19th century, and research institutions have successively carried out technological research and development; after 2007, wireless charging technology has entered a stage of rapid development; around 2010, the automotive industry began to apply related technologies one after another. In recent years, wireless charging has become a hot spot, and many component suppliers, car companies, and technology companies have launched wireless charging tests for new energy vehicles.

Kia’s wireless charging technology has been successfully tested, and the popularization of wireless charging technology is imperative!

Kia successfully tested wireless charging technology

According to reports, on April 10, South Korea's Hyundai-Kia American Technology Center is testing the wireless charging of cars. Although wireless charging is still an emerging technology, it does not mean that only expensive luxury cars can enjoy it. Recently, Kia Motors announced that after three years of fast charging wireless technology research and development, they have now cooperated with the US wireless charging technology company Mojo Mobile and Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Department’s Energy Office to conduct wireless charging on a fleet of Soul electric vehicles. The Soul electric car is also the only electric car currently sold by Korean car companies. It is reported that this wireless charging technology of Kia can provide more than 10 kilowatts of power to the car, and the charging efficiency can reach 85%. It is worth noting that even if there is a deviation from the charging device when parking, it will not affect the normal charging process. This is definitely good news for drivers with poor parking skills.

The wireless charging of electric vehicles is similar to the wireless charging of mobile phones. Car companies will install a transmitter coil on the ground, and a corresponding receiver coil in the car. When the two coils are connected in a straight line, An electromagnetic field is formed between the transmitting and receiving coils, and the transmission of electric energy is realized. But like the wireless charging of mobile phones, electric vehicles will also have the problem of energy loss during the wireless charging process. Therefore, car manufacturers and research institutions are currently trying to improve the charging efficiency as much as possible.

Kia also confessed that the current wireless charging system is not yet able to achieve mass production, but there has been a significant improvement in energy output and efficiency.

Static wireless charging: charge when parking

mainland

At the end of 2017, Continental announced that it would launch a wireless inductive charging pad equipped with sensors. It is understood that this wireless charging network system mainly relies on a charging board placed underground to emit electromagnetic waves. The induction coil on the car receives electromagnetic waves and uses the principle of electromagnetic conversion to charge the car battery. The system, combined with a micro-navigation device, can park the vehicle accurately above the charging board. Compared with the traditional parking assist system, its accuracy rate is 10 times higher.

Continental said that this wireless charging system has a power of 11 kilowatts and an efficiency of 90%. It can travel 1 mile in 90 seconds and 20 kilometers in every 20 minutes of charging. It is reported that this technology has been installed on the BMW 530e model and will be applied to some Mercedes-Benz models in the future. In addition, Continental is currently studying the construction of wireless charging transmitters for parking lots so that electric vehicles can be charged in small amounts at any time while driving.

Plugless Power System by Evatran

As early as 2016, Evatran developed the Plugless Power system, which can provide wireless charging for Tesla Model S. The system consists of two parts, a charging board and an adapter. The charging board is placed on the ground or in the parking space, and is connected to the power supply through a cable; the adapter needs to be installed on the bottom of the electric vehicle by professionals. Simply put, it is to receive power from the charging board through the adapter to realize wireless charging. After the installation is complete, the user only needs to park the car on the charging board to charge it. The charging capacity per hour can drive 20 miles. It takes about 10 to 12 hours to fully charge the Model S, depending on the battery capacity.

According to reports, the wireless charging system provided by Evatran, wireless induction 7.2 kilowatts per hour, is enough to ensure the daily charging of MODEL S.

Dynamic wireless charging: charge while turning on

Qualcomm Halo

In May 2017, Qualcomm announced that it has completed a trial of wireless charging in electric vehicles, that is, adding inductive charging equipment on the road so that the car can be charged while driving. It is reported that at a speed of 100Km, it can reach a wireless charging power of 20 kilowatts, and it has been tested to wirelessly charge two vehicles in motion at the same time. Unlike most inductive charging, Qualcomm Halo technology can provide high energy transmission in the air, and is suitable for a variety of car models. It uses a multi-coil design, even if the charging board is not aligned with the vehicle, it can still carry out efficient energy transmission.

WiTricity

WiTricity is a start-up company born out of the MIT laboratory, focusing on wireless charging technology for more than 10 years. Mainly do wireless charging technology based on magnetic resonance, that is, use the space magnetic field of the near field to transfer energy, through the selective energy exchange between the highly coupled resonators, the power supply and the receiving device can be precisely adjusted and matched. 245 patents. WiTricity's wireless charging is similar to Qualcomm's Halo technology, so it has become a competitor. However, WiTricity does not intend to manufacture the hardware used in the car's wireless charging system, but to license its intellectual property rights to others and provide partners with reference designs for building hardware. At present, WiTricity has cooperated with Toyota, GM, Nissan and other auto companies.

Car wireless charging, promising prospects

It is understood that the advantages of wireless charging are mainly reflected in three aspects:

● The first is high security, because wireless charging does not require a plug-in process, and is not affected by weather such as rain and snow and extreme environments, and can be used normally in complex working conditions.

● The second is high reliability. Compared with wired charging, wireless charging has no mechanical wear.

● The third is good convenience, which can realize automatic charging and solve the problem of convenience in the last mile of unmanned driving.

However, in the process of gradual acceleration of the industrialization of wireless charging, it has encountered constraints such as ununified standards, few engineering practices, and high application costs.

Although facing many difficulties, with the development of new energy vehicles, the application and popularization of wireless charging technology may only be a matter of time.
