Mobile Semiconductor Revenue Increases 15% Supported by Smartphone Demand

In 2010, sales of smartphones surged by 71%. At the same time, revenue from the handheld device semiconductor market increased by 15% over the previous year. The Wi-Fi connection chip market's overall revenue increased by 62%, thanks to the growth of the tablet PC market, and application processor revenue increased by 34%.

The ABI’s report on mobile device semiconductor market data shows that Qualcomm, Texas Instruments, Samsung, Apple and Marvell are the top five vendors.

The continuing demand for smart phones has become a major driver of growth in the semiconductor market. From the point of view of investment recovery and cross-technical barriers, many semiconductor manufacturers are integrating and acquiring, in order to concentrate their technological power for the future.

The overall revenue of handheld device semiconductor manufacturers will continue to grow in the next five years. The main driving force is the gradual increase in the number of functions supported by integrated circuits in the next generation of smart phones. The competition in this market will also become more and more intense. Intel acquired Infineon, Broadcom acquired Beceem, Qualcomm acquired Atheros, and Samsung also had acquisition plans.
