Samsung will continue to invest in the LED industry in this year (2015).
According to reports, Samsung intends to merge the original LED production line "Line 3" and "SR line" into one, and transfer it to "Line 5" located in Gyeonggi-do, Gyeonggi-do. Line 5 was originally responsible for the production of Samsung's system semiconductors, but the company decided to convert it into an LED chip production line. Line 5 mainly produces 4" and 8" products.
Samsung has 150 MOCVD equipment, the main purpose is to manufacture LED chips. According to the report, Samsung is the operator with the most MOCVD equipment in South Korea. The industry believes that the transfer of the above production line is expected to take more than one year to complete.
It is rumored that Samsung intends to develop two LED chips simultaneously on Line 5, based on silicon substrates and sapphire. Among them, the prototype of the silicon-based LED chip has been previously produced by Line 3.
At present, LED chips are still dominated by sapphire substrates. If the sapphire can be replaced by silicon crystal, the production cost of the LED chip can be greatly reduced, and the expansion can be accelerated. Samsung is stepping up research and development of LEDs based on 8-inch silicon wafers.
The Japanese version of the South Korean media "East Asia Daily" was reported on October 27, 2014. South Korea's Samsung Electronics will withdraw from the LED lighting market. Samsung has decided to suspend its LED lighting sales and other related businesses in overseas markets. The customer conveys that LED lighting related business will not be launched in overseas markets in the future. According to reports, Samsung will continue to engage in LED lighting business in South Korea in the future. However, due to the small size of the South Korean market, Samsung’s withdrawal from overseas markets is equivalent to Samsung’s exit from the LED lighting market.
According to the report, according to Samsung’s related parties, Samsung’s company will be forced to make the above decision because of the severe competition with existing LED lighting manufacturers and the fact that more and more manufacturers such as Chinese companies are playing a low-price strategy. Resources are fully betting on the LED parts business. More than 90% of Samsung's LED-related business revenues are contributed by the "LED parts business for electronic products" used in panel backlight modules.
