Single-chip fully integrated digital demodulator with cable set-top box

STMicroelectronics has introduced a single-chip fully integrated digital demodulator, the STV0370. The device is a front-end device for advanced interactive cable digital TVs and terrestrial and cable set-top boxes (STBs).

This multi-standard chip supports the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) Standard A/53 Annex D (8VSB2) for digital terrestrial receivers and the ITU-T J.83/B (US Cable) standard for cable television. Moreover, it also supports Downlink Interactive Out-of-Band (OOB) QPSK demodulation and fully integrated super-heterodyne down-conversion tuner, eliminating the need for an external OOB tuning circuit.

The STV0370 features strong multi-channel signal and echo suppression for enhanced indoor and outdoor antenna reception. It supports the CEA antenna control interface standard (EIA/CEA-909, parts A and B), allowing users to adjust the antenna gain, polarization and beam direction by using smart antenna technology instead of adjusting the physical position to optimize reception.

To facilitate system software control, the user can manage the STV0370 through a 2-wire I2C interface. On-chip features include high-performance 10-bit and 8-bit ADCs, and integrated SRAM for byte insertion processing, so no external memory is required.

The STV0370 uses ST's 90nm process technology and smaller die size to ensure low cost and reduced power consumption. Its package is available in a 128-pin LQFP package. The number of samples is now available. Mass production will be achieved in the first quarter of 2005. The price in bulk is $8.00 (for reference only).
