Facebook's next-generation wireless standalone VR headset Oculus Quest, which will be released next year, has been three years since the release of Oculus Rift. So far, the sales of Oculus headsets are less than 2 million units, and the speed of sales seems to be slowing down.
One reason for this phenomenon is that VR technology has not progressed as quickly as people expected. Even after Quest enters the market, Rift will still be a high-end device in the Oculus VR headset. This is an unusual state of technology products. Usually, the device three years ago should have been eclipsed and eliminated. Undoubtedly, Quest is undoubtedly a big step forward for the entire industry. However, it also shows the limitations that VR may have in the next few years.
Quest's progress and advantages
The biggest advancement of Oculus Quest is to get rid of the cables that hinder users from high-end VR headsets. Since all the hardware and software are contained in the device itself, users no longer need to connect the VR headset to the computer as in Rift or HTV Vive.
As part of the wireless VR experience, the Quest headset panel uses four wide-angle cameras to track the handle, from sensors outside the headset to built-in sensors, which is called inside-out tracking in the industry. The headset will recognize and map real-world objects around the user, and determine how the handle moves to build the virtual world that the user sees.
In theory, this means that Quest users can move freely, and the device can warn them before they encounter a wall or table. Facebook said that Quest will provide the same level of VR experience as Rift, and it will bring users completely immersive, not just a 360-degree video viewing device like Oculus Go. However, there may be some factors that hinder high-quality VR in Quest, and the inside-out tracking system may be one of them.
Quest's shortcomings
Frankly speaking, there is still a gap between the computing power of Quest and PC at present, not to mention the price of Quest 399 dollars, the price of a single VR quality graphics card can exceed 399 dollars, Quest is based on Qualcomm's Snapdragon 835 chip design. By the time Quest was officially released, the Snapdragon 835 had been launched for more than two years, which meant that Quest would not be able to have the latest PC features, which would limit its graphics quality and even its ability to run games.
To make up for this, content producers may have to recreate VR applications adapted to the Quest platform to provide users with a relatively low-quality but stable experience. Even after the release of Quest, Facebook will keep Rift in the product list, because Rift will still be the best headset for Oculus experience.
Compared with the outside-in tracking of Rift or Vive, the inside-out tracking function of Quest also brings limitations. The four cameras on the headset will not be able to capture the full 360-degree positioning, so if the user moves the controller behind him, the device may lose track, Gabor Szauer, an Oculus development engineer, also acknowledged this. Microsoft's headset uses inside-out tracking technology, and very obvious tracking problems occur in the game, and some blind spots will make the controller disappear from the line of sight. Quest needs to effectively solve this problem, otherwise consumers may not buy it.
An important step forward
In any case, Quest is an important step forward for VR. It gets rid of clumsy wires and is attractive because of its $399 price. However, it will not be the best performing VR headset. This may limit the advantages of the device, because early VR players already have better headsets, and new consumers may not be ready to use a VR device.
At present, the iteration of VR headsets is limited by the chip size and power consumption that power the experience. In view of this, Quest may be the most competitive product among VR headsets for a period of time.
A business tablet must have powerful business functions. At present, users use tablet products more for entertainment, and insufficient development of commercial value has become a major factor restricting the development of tablet computers. Many far-sighted terminal manufacturers have set their sights on the business tablet field.
Generally speaking, when business users choose tablet PC products, they still focus on "regular items" such as processor, battery, operating system, and built-in applications, especially office software applications, which are a good helper for business users.
First of all, there must be powerful office software such as customer management software, which can record customer data and related information anytime, anywhere. There is also a need for powerful marketing software, software marketing, reducing manual intervention, and one person can handle all the publicity and customer information.
