Wolfson has released the WM8960 Stereo Codec (CODEC), which integrates a filterless Class D stereo speaker driver, multiple stereo analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) and digital-to-analog converters. (DAC), headphone driver, and a device with a built-in phase-locked loop. The device is positioned on emerging products such as mobile phones with stereo speakers and personal mobile video players, which require high quality audio performance and high battery life. Chips incorporating Class D technology are critical for building multi-channel, high-performance audio systems for portable digital audio products while minimizing power consumption.
The WM8960's Class D speaker driver continuously delivers up to 1W (1% total harmonic distortion at 8 ohms) while also synchronizing the clock with the DAC for low noise and click and click suppression. The WM8960 also has a capacitorless drive mode that removes the need for a large number of external components. As a device well suited for portable applications, the WM8960 consumes only 10mW in playback mode, making it one of the lowest power devices in its class.
The WM8960's highly flexible input configuration includes a complete stereo single-ended or pseudo differential microphone interface, and three analog sources to eliminate external analog conversion.
The WM8960 is now available in a small 5x5 QFN package and is priced at $2.98 in quantities of 10,000.
