Wolfson launches single channel CODE

Wolfson Microelectronics Co., Ltd. has introduced an ultra-small single-channel CODEC (codec) - WM8940. It reduces background noise by using four adjustable notch filters, providing enhanced audio recording for digital still cameras (DSCs), camcorders, personal recording tools, and VoIP phones. The ultra-small package is another important feature of the WM8940, which saves 40% of the PCB panel compared to previous generation devices.

Digital cameras and camcorders are particularly challenging for audio recording and playback. Zoom and focus motors, wind noise, and mechanical vibration noise on the camera leave unwanted noise in the final recording. In addition, if the distance between the recording object and the microphone is far from the noise source inside the camera, the microphone amplifier is required to have very high gain and sophisticated noise suppression technology.

To be suitable for these noisy environments, the WM8940 chip is optimized for four fully tunable digital filters combined with a range of programmable DSP functions to reduce noise during recording. The device also includes an internal phase-locked loop (PLL) with flexible sampling rate, a headphone and speaker driver, and a wind noise filter, creating a complete, integrated sound solution for digital cameras.

The WM8940 is available now in a 4x4 24-pin QFN package. The purchase price is 10,000 and is priced at $1.74 each.
