Background: In 2014, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) began adopting a new approach to the ENERGY STAR-approved Intelligent Thermostat, which focuses on “confirmed†consumer home energy savings. The EPA is now working with stakeholders to develop a second draft of a new specification for a new product category called the Networked Thermostat (CT).
The EPA defines a networked thermostat as a product that can control an area's air conditioning heating (HVAC) equipment and that can also communicate with external sources. Communication is usually done via a home WiFi network and an internet connection that are independent of the thermostat. Products that do not have the energy-saving data required to collect and transmit are not covered by this specification.
The main changes in the second draft include:
1. Added standby power and static temperature accuracy test methods
2, deleted the occupancy detection requirements
3, because the networked thermostat service provider currently provides a number of command response options, simplifying grid response requirements
4. Provides the option to verify the actual performance and energy savings of the site.
For the time being, the draft specification requires that products must first meet the following performance requirements:
