Who will win NB-IoT or LTE-M?

In terms of the Internet of Things cellular network LPWA connection, China seems to determine the dominance between NB-IoT and LTE--M and provide a valuable testing ground for the world.

When it comes to low-power wide-area network (LPWA) connections that connect a large number of sensor networks in smart factories, smart farms, and smart cities, which connection method can have the biggest impact: NB - IoT or LTE-M?

According to a report by market research firm Berg Insight last week, NB-IoT (narrowband Internet of Things) seems to be winning because of the demand for this technology in the world's most populous country.

This is important because European mobile operators are generally slow to launch NB-IoT networks (except Deutsche Telekom and Vodafone), while US companies tend to favor LTE-M rather than NB-IoT.

Analysts at Berg Insight predict that global NB-IOT equipment shipments will grow at a CAGR of 42% per year, from 106.9 million units in 2018 to 613.2 million units in 2023. In contrast, they believe that global shipments of LTE-M devices are expected to be only 185.3 million units in 2023.

The report is the author of the senior analyst Tobias

Tobias Ryberg said: "China is driving a major shift in the global cellular IoT industry."

He added: "China has launched one of the world's largest digital infrastructure projects and will generate billions of new IoT devices in the next five years." He pointed out that NB-IOT has been designated as China's preferred LPWA technology. And play a key role in national policy.

Who will win NB-IoT or LTE-M?

Magnificent goal

In fact, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), the Chinese telecommunications regulator, further announced the ambitious goal of NB-IoT deployment last year. These plans include the completion of 400,000 base stations by the end of 2017, providing connectivity to more than 20 million IoT devices, and by 2020, will increase to 1.5 million base stations, providing connectivity to more than 600 million IoT devices.

In response, China's two leading mobile operators, China Mobile and China Telecom, launched the NB-IOT network in China. China Telecom is the first mobile operator to cover the whole country, and China Unicom, which ranks third, is close behind.

Earlier this month, China Mobile Hong Kong (CMHK) announced an agreement with real estate developer Sino Group to deploy NB-IOT network in Xinhe's residential and commercial real estate in Hong Kong, initially focusing on smart homes and smart phones. Shopping centers and smart property management projects.

At the same time, in February of this year, China Telecom announced cooperation with Shenzhen Water Group to launch the world's first NB-IOT-based water management platform. In recent years, the water supply problem in Shenzhen has become increasingly serious due to drought and water pollution at local factories.

To solve this problem, the project will collect real-time data from 1,200 smart water meters to conduct pipe network monitoring and water quality control for 4,500 households. Prior to the pilot of the project, Shenzhen Water Group usually had to send staff to the customer property office to identify and solve water problems.

Global view

As Analysys Mason analyst Tom Rebbeck wrote in a research report earlier this year, all of these activities could have a ripple effect on technology elsewhere in the world:

"Measures taken by Chinese operators should contribute to the development of the global NB-IoT ecosystem. The scale of China's network is large, which should help lower prices and solve some of the problems encountered before. This will also benefit Huawei ( Huawei) and other Chinese companies that are involved in this technology, because these companies will also look to markets outside China, which will also benefit Chinese manufacturers and application developers."

Industry perspective

China has a large population, and it is an indisputable fact that the government has made large-scale investments in technologies such as NB-IoT, artificial intelligence and robotics. China is also an important partner in the manufacture of the United States and Europe, as well as a technology research partner of many Internet of Things companies in the West. The investment in artificial intelligence development in a city in Tianjin alone can be comparable to that of all EU member states.
